UW Divisions of Hematology and Medical Oncology Merge

The unification of the Divisions of Hematology and Medical Oncology into the new Division of Hematology and Oncology was announced in May 2022 jointly by Dr. Barbara Jung, Chair of Medicine at the UW and Dr. Thomas Lynch, President and Director of Fred Hutch.

To support the clinical integration of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and UW Medicine, a new role was created for an individual to serve both as head of this new division, reporting to the UW Chair of Medicine, and as a senior vice president at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, reporting to the Hutch’s President and Director. Dr. Sara Hurvitz was chosen for that role, starting August 1, 2023.

By bringing together these two outstanding and accomplished UW divisions, we will build on the rich collaboration between our organizations to accelerate our research and education and ultimately improve care for our patients.
