Biography

The major focus of Dr. Dhawale’ research is understanding the patients experience of communication in the cancer care setting. She is particularly interested in developing methods to optimize communication with patients and between healthcare teams. As examples, she is spearheading efforts to introduce virtual visits (video-consultation) to hospitalized patients and bedside rounding on the Inpatient Oncology Service. She (in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Gallagher and Dr. Kathy Mazor) is also investigating how physicians communicate with patients and colleagues about delayed diagnoses of cancer and (in collaboration with Dr. Joachim Deeg) how physicians talk to patients about uncertainty in cancer care.
